Clearfield United Methodist Church, New Providence, Lancaster, Pennsylvania, USA

Notes: Excerpted from Churches of Today and Yesterday in Southern Lancaster County, Edited by Raymond L. Dunlap, The fellowship of Solanco Churches, 1968

Clearfield Methodist Church is located in Providence Township, Lancaster County, on a road leading to Rawlinsville in the Smithville-Union area. For nearly 45 years, this church has been one of two on the Clearfield and Marticville Charge, although its history is much older. Clearfield is in the South District of the Philadelphia Conference of the Methodist Church.

The present minister at Clearfield is the Reverend Lanta A. Shollley, junior. Morning Worship Service is held every Sunday at 9 A.M., followed by Church School at 10 A.M. The present membership of the church is 67.

In 1835, land was purchased for the sum of two dollars for the purpose of erecting a place of worship "for the use of the Methodist Episcopal Society of Clearfield." The first church was erected in 1836 and enlarged in 1853. In 1876, it was demolished, and in December of that same year dedicatory services were held in the new brick church built upon the original site. Adjacent to the church is Clearfield Cemetery.

Throughout the years the church edifice has been kept in excellent condition. In the summer of 1963 the remodeling of the basement was completed, and the dedication and mortgage-burning took place in September of 1963.

Situated across the road from the church is a small dwelling which is owned and maintained by church members and rented to tenants. It is fondly called the "church house" but is not a parsonage. A spacious yard surrounds this house.
