      William was born on his father's farm in Big Lick Twp. He was educated in the county schools and worked on the farm until the outbreak of the Civil War. He served in Co. A, 21st Ohio Infantry. He was engaged in battles at Stones River, Chickamauga, Chattanooga, the Atlanta Campaign and was severely wounded in the left thigh at Jonesboro. After recuperating at Atlanta and Chattanooga he was mustered out in 1865. On Jan. 30,1866 he married Sarah Crossley and moved to Findley where he was engaged later in the meat business. He was a member of the GAR, the Republican Party and the Evangelical Church.
