  • Notes
    • TR Hamilton -

James Hamilton received a deed (Deed Book 8, p. 29) on 23 September 1822 for
42 3/4 acres of land he inherited from his father, Thomas Hamilton. On 24
September 1822, James and his wife, Elizabeth, sold the 42 3/4 acres for
$428 (Deed Book, p. 300). The deed clearly identified those 42 3/4 acres as
being part of the original 400 acres of land purchased from Holt and
McMillin in 1790 by Thomas Hamilton. Thomas Hamilton's will did specify that
150 acres which included the homeplace were to be equally divided between
his sons William and James. William did receive 75 acres, stated earlier,
John Hamilton received 134 acres rather than the 100 acres he had been
willed. The total amount of land deeded to the sons of Thomas Hamilton
equaled 401 3/4 acres. Thomas Hamilton did state in his will that William
and James could sell part of their land but are "not to exact more...than
two judicious men shall say it is worth." Perhaps John purchased part of the
land that James was to inherit.
