  • Notes
    • I remember my mother-in-law, Mabel very well although she was in her sixties when I met her. She was a dear, sweet woman who loved her children and was very religious. We spent a lot of time at her home, which she enjoyed making big dinners for her family and was a good cook. After which, we teamed up and played Pinochle for hours. She had a girlish quality to her and laughed freely. She sold Avon to help support the household and took in boarders to make ends meet after her divorce from George.

She was known for being quite frugal and could stretch a dollar better than anyone I ever knew. My ex tells the story how she could make lunch for five of her children and use one six-ounce bottle of coca cola for all of them!

I remember that she was raised by her grandmother in Carey, OH because her mother died when she was a toddler. Mabel hated "things that stuck out" like pinecones or cactus, but loved how some trees looked in winter with beautiful shapes. She was always lady-like and neat in appearance. She had her hair done at the beauty shop every week. Mable had a beautiful, smooth complexion, nearly free of lines or wrinkles until the day she died.

One time I took her to Carey, OH to the cemetary in the country where she was looking for family. She remembered that there was an Adam in the family, but didn't remember who exactly. But she liked the name. Mabel died of cancer Dec. 1981 and when my son was born in 1982, we named him Adam. It was only this year (2001) that I found the Adam that she referred to many years ago. It was Adam Hile, her great-grandfather. Mabel is buried in that little, country cemetary
