The only info I have on Benoni Mitchell comes from census information of 1850 in Pleasant Township, Hancock Co., Ohio. He was one year old at the time of the census, so he was born in 1848 or 1849.

His father was Robert Name: Mitchell, born about 1804 in Pennsylvania. Robert's wife was named Miriam and she was born in Delaware about 1810. Of the children still living with them in 1850, the first four were born in Pennsylvania. The other six listed were born in
Ohio. That would imply that the family moved to Ohio about 1837.

The reason I took down this information is that many of my Culp ancestors lived in this same township, or an adjoining one, and one of them married a William Mitchell, who was born in Pennsylvania about 1813. He may have been a younger brother to Robert.

He married Rachel Culp, eldest child of my direct ancestor Benoni Culp, in 1839. Benoni Culp died in 1841, and Benoni Mitchell was probably named after him, as it was not a common name. I haven't found William Mitchell's ancestry, but I see that in the 1880 census he says his parents were both born in Ireland. In 1880 he and Rachel, apparently childless, were living in Odessa Township, Ionia Co., Michigan, which is where probably died.

which is in several of the HCPD Journals. I am not sure which ones.
Bill writes that John William Mitchell was present at Surrender Field
when General Cornwallis' sword was surrendered
(that he had climbed a tree to get a better viewing position.)

Aaron Butler Mitchell served in the Civil War. He enlisted in the Ohio 21st Inf. Co G for two years. He reenlisted for as long as the war lasted so he fought four years and I have his two discharge papers. The state of Ohio presented him with a bronze medal with four gold stars on it and his name, Co. etc. for his long service. I have it.

I copied this exactly.

142 Albert & Ellen were each living in Newark, OH. Ellen left her husband George & moved in with Albert, bringing her 2 children Lizzie & Lancy. They moved on to Mansfield, Ohio, & eventually ended up in Cleveland. George sued Ellen for a divorce, which was granted in 1885, & was awarded custody of the 2 children. He never got them. George died in 1889. Under Ohio law, Ellen & Albert became man and wife by common law. I've never found a formal marriage for them.

Ellen died in 1890 and was buried in an unmarked grave in Monroe Street Cemetery in Cleveland. Albert re-married & later died of general paralysis of the insane, which is an old way of saying syphilis. When son Charles' wife Freada died in 1911, he had her buried above his mother in the same grave, which is still unmarked. Charles & his 2 daughters then disappeared. Where did you get your birth information for Charles?

144 All descendants of Elizabeth Boude and Jeremiah Gatchell are distant cousins of Lady Diana Frances Spencer, Princess of Wales, who in 1981 married Prince Charles Windsor, in 2002 the first in line as heir to the throne of England.

Consequently, all such Gatchell descendants are also cousins to Diana's sons Prince William and Prince Harry, who are respectively 2nd and 3rd in line as heirs. Elizabeth Boude's parents were the 7th great grandparents of Diana Frances Spencer.

Elizabeth Boude Gatchell apparently maintained an independent spirit, somewhat removed from
her husband. In the early 1700s when her husband Jeremiah Gatchell followed her brother to Philadelphia, Elizabeth apparently either remained in or returned to Massachusetts to care for the land owned by her husband. According to "The Inter-Colonial Grimstone Boude and His Family"
by Francis James Dallett, F. A. S. G., published in "The Genealogist" (New York), Vol. 2, 1981, a 1704 record in the Essex County, Massachusetts, deeds (65:241-42) gave her power of attorney to dispose of Jeremiah's property remaining in Essex County, Massachusetts. This property was kept in the family though, and in 1713 was deeded over to Jeremiah Gatchell, Jr., who also had
remained behind in Massachusetts.

Without her husband, Elizabeth joined the First Church in Salem in August 1683, and she alone
was among 50 members at Marblehead, Massachusetts, who petitioned for their own church.
On August 13, 1684, the Church of Marblehead officially gathered, and Elizabeth had five of her children by Jeremiah Gatchell baptized in that church. But in each baptismal record, Elizabeth alone is shown as the parental sponsor.

Also in 1684, Elizabeth filed court charges of blasphemy against her brother-in-law, Joseph Gatchell. As a result, Joseph was placed in the pillory and had his tongue pierced with a hot iron.
Author Dallet also cites another Essex County court record in his article "The Inter-Colonial Grimstone Boude and His Family" where he states that "Church attendance was not entirely serene for Elizabeth, who was accused in 1694/5 of yanking another woman out of her seat while at
worship." Definitely a strong-willed, independent-minded woman!
